Papers : relating to Mayo's Bridge, Richmond, Va., 1790- 1801.

The collection contains records relating to the building, operation, and maintenance of Mayo's Bridge. Included are a daybook containing a daily record of customers using the toll bridge across the James River with loose papers and receipts (1790-1794); and a cash book (1800-1801) recording receipts and expenditures for the bridge, with incidental records of weather and some personal family events and expenses. The 1 July 1801 entry notes that the "old bridge" was used for the last time this day. Later entries show the progress in building a new bridge on the same site. Other entries concern accounts with John Williamson for work on the bridge, 1799-1801, a memo of agreement, 1800, to build the bridge, and a contract and receipts, 1800; there are also entries for John Shields' work on the bridge. Also included are loose toll receipts of Samuel Paine (1793) and A. Cardozo (1794).
